Camborne

"Camborne is best known as a centre for the former Cornish tin and copper mining industry, having its working heyday during the later 18th and early 19th centuries. Camborne was just a village until transformed by the mining boom which began in the late 18th century and saw the Camborne and Redruth district become the richest mining area in the world. It is situated about 3 miles from Redruth, with the two towns being linked by the A3047. The railway station is a half-mile south from the town centre and Commercial Square is at the heart of Camborne town centre being known as a well known meeting place. Within a few miles lie the cliffs at Hells Mouth, the bluebell woodlands at Tehidy and Pendarves as well as mining sites at East Pool, King Edward Mine and the Great Flat Lode. Camborne is home to several other mysterious and ancient monuments and ruins including Giant’s Quoit and Carn Brea Monument. Camborne offers a wide range of shops and traditional Cornish pubs and cafés and many local events and clubs to keep you busy.

Redruth

Redruth is situated 3 miles from Camborne, 9 miles west of Truro, 12 miles east of St Ives, 18 miles north east of Penzance and 11 miles north west of Falmouth. The name Redruth (pronounced 'Red-rooth') derives from its older Cornish name, Rhyd-ruth. It means Red Ford (literally fordred). The first syllable 'red' means ford. The second 'ruth' means red. Historically, Redruth was a small market town overshadowed by its neighbours until a boom in the demand for copper ore during the 18th century. Key shops and other outlets within the town centre include a multi-screen cinema, a covered market way, the Cornish Studies Centre, an old butter market, various antique shops, a second hand book shop and two supermarkets. Redruth is an important transport hub. The railway station is a railhead for both Helston and the Lizard, and there are frequent buses connecting the three places.

Godrevy Head to St Agnes

Godrevy Head to St Agnes is a coastal Site Of Special Scientific Interest noted for both its biological and geological characteristics. A number of rare and scarce plant species can be found on the site, along with many breeding seabirds. It starts at Godrevy Head (with the Godrevy Towans) in the west and continues for 20 miles to the north east, through Portreath, Porthtowan and ends just past St Agnes Head, north of the village of St Agnes.

Lizard Point

Just over 30 minutes away from Camborne sits the most southerly point of mainland Britain, Lizard Point. The area is famous for its carved serpentine items which range from ornaments to the pump handles in the local public house, The Lizard Inn (The Top House). Lizard Point is for many ships the starting point of their ocean passage and a notorious shipping hazard. The Lizard Lighthouse is situated at Lizard Point.

Penzance

About 15 miles from Camborne lies the historic port of Penzance, the most westerly major town in Cornwall. Penzance boasts one of the mildest climates in the UK and has an abundance of palm trees and gardens full of sub-tropical plants. Penzance is home to the Acorn Arts Centre which provides a mixture of theatre, film, dance music and cabaret and Penlee House Museum, an art gallery and museum notable for its collection of paintings by members of the Newlyn School. There is access to fantastic beaches nearby, restaurants and the fabulous St Michaels Mount is a popular attraction for tourists. Take a walk along Chapel Street and look out for number 25, home to Maria Branwell, the mother of Charlotte, Anne and Emily Bronte.

Land's End

About 8 miles west of Penzance is Land's End, the most westerly point of mainland Cornwall and Britain. Land's End offers spectacular scenery and is a popular venue for rock climbers. The area around Land's End has been designated part of an Important Plant Area, by the organisation Plantlife, for rare species of flora. Land's End has a particular resonance because it is often used to suggest distance. Land's End to John o' Groats in Scotland is a distance of 838 miles by road and this Land's End to John o' Groats distance is often used to define charitable events such as end-to-end walks and races in the UK. Just over 1 mile off the coast of Land's End is the Longships Lighthouse.

Falmouth

The town of Falmouth, the largest port in Cornwall, is about 30 minutes away from Camborne on the south coast. Falmouth has 5 main beaches, is home to many theatre groups, and the Falmouth Art Galllery houses a diverse 19th and 20th century art collection including notable modern Cornish artists. Falmouth is famous for its harbour. Together with Carrick Roads, it forms the third deepest natural harbour in the world, and the deepest in Western Europe. It has been the start or finish point of various round-the-world record-breaking voyages. Falmouth has a football team, is home to one of the county's biggest cricket clubs and has long been a popular boating and water sports location. In 2016, Falmouth won the "Great British High Street 2016" award.

Truro

Truro is the county town of Cornwall, is around 30 minutes away from Camborne and the most southern city in mainland Britain. Truro has various chain stores, speciality shops and markets, which reflect its history as a market town. The indoor Pannier Market is open year-round with many stalls and small businesses. The city is also popular for its catering, including cafés and bistros, and for night life, with its many bars, clubs and restaurants. Truro is also known for the Hall for Cornwall, a performing arts and entertainment venue. Lemon Quay is the centre of most festivities in Truro, which attracts visitors year-round with numerous different events.
